Today marks the first day of spring and what a beautiful day to mark the occasion. Blue bird skies with a thick blanket of snow still covering the ground.
Today we celebrated the first day of spring with a nature walk. These walks are used to awaken an interest in the child and so help show the passage of time. This week the trees were bare, but next nature walk maybe they will be budding and a new host of bird life will return. We will walk the same route and observe the changes. I took some pictures so we can compare this day in spring to next years first day of spring.
We collected some specimens for our nature tray. The girls are really into life cycles at the moment so we stopped at a spruce tree, collected some pine cones and explored its needles and bark. I will be preparing some material for the classroom on the life cycle of the spruce tree. We found some pine cones from another tree that will hopefully spark some curiosity into the classification of our local coniferious trees.
We also found these neat little seeds that if you tossed them in the air, they spun like a helicopters hence the name helicopter seeds. We wrote our names with mud and sticks and played in icy puddles. It was a beautiful way to mark the changing of the seasons.
